ICONCRAFT honors Thai textile heroes who preserve Thai heritages and local wisdom

ICONCRAFT, the creative inspiration platform for Thai craftsmen and the largest creative hub of Thai craftworks on the 4th-5th floors of ICONSIAM and the latest branch on the 3rd floor Siam Discovery, is pleased to honor Thai textile heroes who preserve Thai heritages and local wisdom by organizing a grand exhibition “ICONCRAFT Thai Textile Heroes” featuring exquisite Thai textiles created by the masters who bring Thai textile to life including Meechai Taesujariya of Ban Kham Pun, Ubon Ratchathani province and Weeratham Trakul-ngernthai of Ban Chansoma, Surin province as well as collaborative works between three leading Thai fashion brands ASAVA, Hook’s by Prapakas and Wisharawish and Ban Tomthong Weaving Group from Buri Rum province. Importantly, a special collection of silk bags by Sirivannavari Bangkok will also be exclusively launched at this event for a limited edition of 35 handbags. Hand woven fabrics in ancient patterns created by artisans from around the country together with an array of products crafted from Thai textiles such as dresses, bags and accessories by leading designers are also offered for sale.

ICONCRAFT is a platform to showcase the talents and support the masterpieces of high skilled artisans from 77 provinces and by more than 500 brands under the same roof. It is also aimed to echo the pride of Thai people toward their intricate handcrafts to be known and well recognized to the world as well as support and co-work with local communities to make this place a community of craft connoisseurs. Another key direction is to preserve the handicrafts which are Thai priceless treasures and give opportunity for the disadvantaged people such as people with disabilities nationwide to showcase their craft skills and have their works on sale here. The inspirational works by the craft masters are regularly held through workshop and installation and everyone is invited to be a part of the handicraft projects.

ICONCRAFT organizes “ICONCRAFT Thai Textile Heroes” - a grand exhibition of Thai textiles exquisitely crafted by the masters who take important roles to preserve Thai heritages. Meechai Taesujariya or Khun Thao, a founder of Baan Kham Pun and Baan Kham Pun Museum in Ubon Ratchathani province, has developed the outstanding and unique mudmee by integrating the intricate weaving techniques of mudmee, koh luang and jok together until it is widely recognized today. He also restores many precious fabric collections that had long been lost such as pha yok thong (gold silk brocade) that His Majesty King Chulalongkorn once commended upon being presented with a gorgeous gold silk brocade that it was a superior work that those of Chiang Mai obviously could not compete and pha sin thiu muk, an ancient cloth of Ubon Ratchathani’s nobility that was thought to be extinct for almost a century. His revival effort brings these rare exquisite textiles to life for Ubon Ratchathani weaving communities and they were inscribed as an intangible cultural heritage of Thailand. In 2000, Meechai developed a beautiful trademark woven fabric called “pha garb bua” that has been assigned as the provincial textile as the cloth is a cauldron of every single character of Ubon Ratchathani fabrics. His cultural preservation effort is a source of inspiration for artisans to revive the ancient techniques and help raise the income to local communities. Meechai was awarded the outstanding master of Ubon Ratchathani by Office of the National Culture Commission and in 2016 was honored as the Master Artisans of Thailand by The SUPPORT Arts and Crafts International Center of Thailand (Public Organization) or SACICT.

Also on view in the exhibition is the intricate and elaborate textiles by the master Weeratham Trakul-ngernthai, the founder of Chansoma Pha Yok Thong weaving group living in Thasawang village in Surin province. With his passion on textile weaving and strong ambition for the revival of ancestral legacy of elegant art, he successfully developed the iconic pha yok (brocade) of Ban Thasawang by combining elaborate royal motifs with folk weaving techniques that he got inspiration from Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother who is a true patroness of Thai crafts. In addition, the exhibition will feature the collaborative works between three leading fashion brands - ASAVA, Hook’s by Prapakas and Wisharawish – with Ban Tomthong Weaving Group from Ban Na Pho, Buri Rum province. These collaborative masterpieces will be available for a limited number of eight sets.

The exhibition also features splendid textiles crafted by Ban Sawai Natural--Dye Weaving Group from Surin province. The community has long preserved the traditional heritage of weaving for centuries and is widely recognized as one of the best workshops of Surin to produce the most eye-catching silk. The community is highly noticeable for mastering the complex and rare weaving techniques that require high expertise, particularly the intricate technique of weaving silk mudmee yok dok (tie-dyed silk brocade) to get dense texture yet silky and breathable qualities.

Another highlight is the launch of the exclusive silk handbag collection of Sirivannavari Bangkok by HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, the creative director. For Sirivannavari Bangkok Craftmanship Showcase, the princess designs this special collection by herself by using her own collection of silks which are intricate textiles crafted by local artisans throughout the country and her aim is to support and raise income for local weaving communities. The fashionable handbags are designed for daily use with the modern twists of the basket and bucket bag styles. The striking feature is the marvelous French-style embroidery from Sirivannavari Embroidery Atelier and Academy, the in-house workshop of couture embroidery, featuring the brand’s signature peacock logo and the letter “S” that shows the truly exquisite craftsmanship of the perfect combination of Thai silk weaving and the art of French embroidery.

Admire and take pride of Thai heritages and local wisdom that are presented in the grand Thai textile exhibition featuring intricate handicrafts by textile artisans as well as an array of handworks ranging from works of art, sculptures, home decorative items, ceramic tableware and stylist accessories by craftsmen throughout the country at ICONCRAFT on the 4th-5th floors of ICONSIAM and the 3rd floor Siam Discovery.
