Thursday 19 May 2022 – At the joint invitation of Caroline Scheufele, Pierre Lescure and Thierry Frémaux, the Trophée Chopard ceremony saw actors Sheila Atim and Jack Lowden presented with their awards by Julia Roberts, godmother of this 2022 edition. Held at the Carlton Hotel Beach Club, the official award dinner welcomed numerous actors gathered to honour the two winners.
Since 2001, at the initiative of Caroline Scheufele, the Trophée Chopard has been honouring new talent annually at a ceremony that is always filled with emotion and celebrates the promising beginnings of an actress's and actor's film career. Through this prize, which is integrated into the official Cannes Festival calendar, the Maison reaffirms its unconditional support for the seventh art.
This year saw actress Julia Roberts assume the role of godmother of the Trophée, presenting the awards to Sheila Atim and Jack Lowden under the benevolent gaze of Pierre Lescure (President of the Festival), Thierry Frémaux (General Delegate of the Festival), Caroline and Karl-Friedrich Scheufele (Co-Presidents of Chopard) and a large gathering of actors, directors and members of the Festival jury. Among them were Xavier Dolan, Saoirse Ronan, Vincent Lindon, Lashana Lynch, Rebecca Hall, Deepika Padukone, Joséphine Japy, Samuel Le Bihan, Finnegan Oldfield, Agathe Rouselle, William Abadie, Benjamin Biolay, Joanna Kulig, Noomi Rapace, Vincent Elbaz, Edgar Ramirez, Jasmine Trinca and Alejandro Nones.
The two winners were chosen in association with Variety magazine by the Trophée Chopard Academy, made up of former winners and godmothers/godfathers of previous editions.
Caroline Scheufele commented: "Chopard loves cinema, and the Trophée represents an ongoing commitment by our Maison to guarantee the rise of new talent. Through this award, we bring an actor and actress, destined to perform in the films of tomorrow, to the attention of the entire film industry and the public. As is the case every year, I was especially moved during the award ceremony – in which the legendary Julia Roberts played godmother – to see the pride in the fact that their talent was being recognised on the faces of these brilliant actors."
The ceremony took place at the Carlton Hotel Beach Club during a star-studded dinner prepared by French chef Bruno Oger. The menu featured a "lobster salad, sweet almond velouté and baby vegetables", followed by a "turbot, celery, virgin leaf, shallot and walnut" dish. Desert was a "Vanilla Traou Mad, Mara des Bois strawberry juice and ice cream" that delighted the guests. These culinary treats were complemented by a white Bergerac "Cadran" 2020 from Château Monestier Latour and a Volnay Premier Cru "Les Taillepieds" 2017 from Domaine de Montille.
The evening ended with a concert by Jeanne Cherhal, who performed songs from the most legendary movies
More than two decades of support for cinema's rising stars
For more than two decades, the winners of the Tropheé Chopard have consistently confirmed the hopes placed in them. From Marion Cotillard who won an Oscar in 2008 for her role in Olivier Dahan's La Vie en Rose; to Léa Seydoux who won a Palme d’Or in 2013 ; along with Diane Kruger who was named Best Actress at Cannes in 2017 ; Niels Schneider, César du meilleur espoir in 2017, as well as Florence Pugh and Jessie Buckley who were nominated for Oscars a few months after winning the Trophée Chopard in 2019 and 2021 respectively, this distinction as often heralded a top international career.
