Booking.com, the world’s leading digital travel company connecting travelers with the widest choice of incredible places to stay and countless memorable experiences, unveiled the one-of-a-kind clay house: ‘Grow Green Stay’ for the first time in Thailand.Following the previous global launch of its Travel Sustainable badge, Booking.com launched the ‘Grow Green Stay’ initiative to show Thai travelers how easy and convenient it is to embark on a sustainable journey with various accessible, sustainable options available around the world.
Rising trend of sustainable tourism and the friction
The latest Sustainable Travel Report commissioned by Booking.com revealed that 94% of Thai travelers believe that sustainable travel is essential to them. Moreover, 90% of Thais said they would prefer to stay in a sustainable hotel. 83% of Thai travelers also indicated that they would be more likely to choose a specific accommodation if they knew it was implementing sustainable practices. Still, some Thai travelers remain uncertain when making sustainable travel decisions as most of them are unaware of such sustainable options in Thailand with some not knowing how to find them.
The concept of ‘Grow Green Stay’
Aiming to encourage and support everyone to follow their intention for sustainability, Booking.com created a sustainable ‘Clay House’ inspired by local Thai wisdom. This eco-friendly house features natural, sandy clay loam and organic materials from local communities. It uses an interior design concept that focuses on reducing energy consumption and material waste to provide travelers with an authentic, unforgettable eco-friendly retreat.
This one-of-a-kind clay house was labeled as a 'Travel Sustainable property' on Booking.com thanks to the sustainable practices implemented by 'Grow Green Stay.' This initiative has implemented easy-to-follow sustainable practices with high impact potential that have been validated by independent advisories and standard certifications for sustainability in the five key pillars of reducing food waste, energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, as well as supporting local communities and eliminating single-use plastics.
Supporting local community
To support local communities in Thailand even further, Booking.com joined hands with its long-standing partner Local Alike, a social enterprise with the mission to uplift the well-being of those in local communities through sustainable tourism. Local Aroi, an expansion of Local Alike, which has a mission of bringing local communities with urbanites and tourists together, has selected unique local dishes from Bangkok's Kudeejeen community made from local ingredients to serve 'Grow Green Stay' guests. This not only provides travelers with farm-to-table delicious fare, but it also benefits the local community by bringing value and visibility to this special cuisine to the table.
